Whitechapel Food Hotspots

DATED: 18.09.23

Our Jack the Ripper London Tour is considered one of the best walking tours in London, and this isn’t solely down to the content covered but also the unique location. The vast majority of the rest of London’s best walking tours are carried out throughout the West End, making the Jack the Ripper Tours in London unique to the East End. While this doesn’t tend to be the first area of England’s capital that tourists flock to, East London is an up-and-coming location and a haven for foodies. Therefore, if you’re looking to grab a bite to eat before or after joining us for one of our tours, discover some of the best food in Whitechapel below.

The Culpeper

The Culpeper is a quintessential British pub, making it the ideal place to chow down on some pub grub ahead of the London Jack the Ripper Tour. After all, Jack the Ripper is a staple figure in English history, meaning draught pints, hearty food, and that warm pub atmosphere might just help you set the scene. In fact, during the winter months, The Culpeper serves up hot toddy and roast dinners. Meanwhile, The Culpeper’s rooftop garden is the ideal spot for a refreshing summer pint or cocktail.

The Culpeper is located at 40 Commercial Street, E1 6TB, which is just a three-minute walk from Aldgate East tube station, the starting point of our tour. Similarly, it’s a seven-minute walk from Spitalfields Market, which is the finishing point.

HotBox

Is there any better combo than a tasty burger and shake? Many restaurants and takeaways have attempted to perfect this over the years, but HotBox has actually come extremely close to doing so. This American barbecue joint is one of the best food places in Whitechapel due to its focus on the most important component of any burger: the meat. One thing that sets HotBox apart from other restaurants is its colossal portions of pure comfort food, meaning you can rest assured that you’re getting the most for your money.

HotBox is located at 46-48 Commercial Street, E1 6LT, which is just a four-minute walk from Aldgate East tube station and a six-minute walk from Spitalfields Market.

Efes Restaurant

Efes is a traditional Turkish restaurant that people flock to from all around the city. Despite this, it’s by no means a new restaurant, as it opened back in 1974. Mr Akkus was blissfully unaware that his restaurant would soon blossom into one of the best restaurants in the entire country, but it’s safe to say that this was a pleasant surprise. He went on to bolster his success further by partnering with a Halal British meat and poultry supplier, as this allowed for additional expansion in the comfort that all meat is fully British and Halal certified.

The Turkish fruit meze platter containing melon, orange, and feta cheese is a popular starter, and the tabouleh vegetarian salad with tomatoes, pepper, and bulgur is another fresh and healthy option. Continuing with the vegetarian theme, the grilled halloumi with salad is another starter that’s both filling and tasty. If you’re completely stumped by what you should eat, the Chef’s special is the way to go. This is otherwise known as Ali Nazik, which is finely chopped lamb over diced aubergine and garlic yoghurt. After all, the chef knows best.

Efes Restaurant is located at 1 Whitechapel Road, E1 6TY, which is just a three-minute walk from Aldgate East tube station and a 10-minute walk from Spitalfields Market.

Tayyabs

Tayyabs is a restaurant that’s loved by locals, and it has been since 1972. It’s renowned for its Indian food that’s spiced perfectly, fresh meat, and tasty vegetables. Quite simply, the restaurant works to combine classic dishes with an ambivalent atmosphere that keeps customers coming back again and again.

Tayyabs is located at 83-89 Fieldgate Street, E1 1JU, which is just a 10-minute walk from Aldgate East tube station and a 17-minute walk from Spitalfields Market.

Sahara Grill

Sahara Grill is a meat-centric restaurant providing made-to-order quality meat dishes. Their Sahara Chops are a popular starter choice, which are mutton chops marinated in the restaurant’s signature spices. Similarly, the Sahara Platter is the ideal dish for sharing, as it consists of flame-grilled chicken, Mediterranean salad, and chips.

Sahara Grill is located at 49-53 New Road, E1 1HH, which is just a 13-minute walk from Aldgate East tube station and a 19-minute walk from Spitalfields Market.
