Getting to Aldgate East from London’s National Railway Stations

When attending one of our Jack the Ripper London Tours, you’ll need to make your way to Aldgate East. Due to the international appeal of the best Jack the Ripper tours in London, we welcome individuals from across the globe to the East End. This means that tour attendees will be touching down at all of London’s national railway stations before embarking on the journey to Aldgate East. That said, we understand just how daunting London’s transport system can be if you’re not local, which is why we’ve put together this handy guide to help you get to the Whitechapel Jack the Ripper Tour with ease, no matter what your starting point may be.

London Blackfriars

First up is London Blackfriars, wherein the quickest way to get to Aldgate East is to get on the District Line towards Upminster and ride five stops, as this will take you under 10 minutes. On the other hand, if you have a bit more time on your hands, you might prep yourself for your walking tour of East London by taking a 35-minute stroll.

London Cannon Street

Following this is London Cannon Street, in which the quickest way to get to Aldgate East is, once again, to use the District Line towards Upminster. This time, you’ll only need to ride three stops, and this will, again, take less than 10 minutes. Alternatively, you might take the journey as an opportunity to get yourself ready for a walking tour of London by embarking on a 23-minute walk.

London Charing Cross

There are two London Underground routes that can be taken from London Charing Cross to Aldgate East; however, one is slightly shorter than the other. First, you will need to take a three-minute walk to Embankment to catch the tube. The quickest route from here is the District Line towards Upminster, where you’ll ride 11 stops, and this will take just under 15 minutes. Alternatively, you can jump on the Circle Line via Liverpool Street and ride for seven stops until you reach Aldgate, which is a five-minute walk from Aldgate East; overall, this route will take you around 20 minutes. Both the District and Circle Line depart from the same platform, so you can just jump on whichever arrives first.

City Thameslink

There are multiple routes in which you can get from City Thameslink to Aldgate East. The shortest route requires you to take a five-minute walk to Blackfriars before getting on the District Line towards Upminster and riding for seven stops. Remember that the Circle Line via Liverpool Street to Aldgate also stops here, so you can take that route if the Circle Line train arrives first.

Another route you can take is getting on the Thameslink train towards Peterborough and riding one stop to Farringdon. At Farringdon, you can change to the Hammersmith and City Line towards Barking and ride for four stops to Aldgate East. Otherwise, you can cut out the use of the Thameslink train by walking 12 minutes to Farringdon. These routes will take you 17 and 22 minutes, respectively.

There are also two bus routes that can take you from City Thameslink to Aldgate East. Firstly, you could walk nine minutes to St. Paul’s and ride the 25 towards Ilford for seven stops. Alternatively, you could walk three minutes to Ludgate Circus (Stop E) and ride the 15 towards Blackwall for nine stops. These routes will take you 25 and 31 minutes, respectively.

Lastly, if you wanted to get prepped for one of the best walking tours in London, you could take a 35-minute walk.

London Euston

There are a few routes that can be taken from London Euston, with the quickest requiring you to get on the Hammersmith and City Line towards Barking and riding for six stops, as this will take you just over 20 minutes. Alternatively, should they arrive first, you could either get on the Circle Line via Liverpool Street or the Metropolitan Line towards Aldgate, each of which stops at Aldgate. This will take you just under half an hour.

Another London Underground route you can take is the Northern Line towards Battersea Power Station before changing to the District Line towards Upminster at Embankment. Overall, this will take just under half an hour.

Last but not least, you could get the 205 bus towards Bow and ride for 18 stops, which will take just under 45 minutes.

London Fenchurch Street

London Fenchurch Street is probably the easiest location from which you can get prepped for your East End walking tour of London, as it’s just a 12-minute walk from Aldgate East.

If you wish to experience London’s public transport, you can walk seven minutes to Tower Hill and get on the District Line towards Upminster and ride one stop. Alternatively, you could walk four minutes to St Katharine Cree and ride on the 25 bus towards Ilford for two stops. Despite this, we think walking is the most fuss-free option for this station.

London King’s Cross/St. Pancras International

There are a couple of routes that can be taken from Kings Cross St. Pancras, the first being the Hammersmith and City Line towards Barking, in which you’ll ride for five stops, taking you just under 15 minutes overall. Despite this, if the Circle Line via Liverpool Street or the Metropolitan Line towards Aldgate shows up first, you can jump on and ride to Aldgate, which will take you just under 20 minutes overall.

London Liverpool Street

London Liverpool Street is another location in which it couldn’t be much easier to prep yourself for your East London walking tours, as it’s just a 17-minute walk away from Aldgate East.

If you were keen to give London transport a go, though, you could get on the Hammersmith and City Line towards Barking and ride for one stop. Alternatively, there are a handful of bus routes that can be taken. For instance, you can get on both the 135 bus towards Crossharbour and the 205 towards Bow and ride for three stops. Otherwise, you can walk nine minutes to Folgate Street (Stop T) and ride three stops.

London Bridge

There are a few routes that can be taken from London Bridge to Aldgate East, with the quickest route requiring you to walk 11 minutes to Monument before getting on the District Line towards Upminster and riding for two stops, which will take you 15 minutes overall. Similarly, if the Circle Line via Liverpool Street arrives first, you can jump on this to Aldgate, which will add five minutes to your journey time.

A few bus routes can also be taken, including the 149 towards Lower Edmonton and the 388 towards Stratford City Bus Station, wherein you ride for four stops. Otherwise, you can get on the 343 towards Aldgate and ride for six stops before taking a six-minute walk to Aldgate East. These routes will take you 19 and 25 minutes, respectively.

Alternatively, you can take a 29-minute walk.

London Marylebone

There are a few London Underground routes that can be taken to get you from London Marylebone to Aldgate East; however, one is significantly shorter than the rest. This involves you walking to Baker Street and riding the Hammersmith and City Line towards Barking for seven stops.

Moorgate

Moorgate is another station that isn’t too far from Aldgate East. First and foremost, you could take a simple 20-minute walk. That said, if you wish to experience London’s transport, you can ride the Hammersmith and City Line towards Barking for two stops, which will take you around four minutes. If the Circle Line via Liverpool Street or Metropolitan Line towards Aldgate arrives first, you can jump on one of these and ride for two stops to Aldgate. Alternatively, you can ride the 100 bus towards Shadwell for three stops and walk around three minutes, which will take you just over 10 minutes overall.

Old Street

There are various routes that can be taken from Old Street, with the easiest requiring you to walk around 12 minutes to get to Moorgate and jump on the Hammersmith and City Line, as mentioned above. If either the Circle or Metropolitan Lines arrive first, you could also ride one of these to Aldgate.

Alternatively, you could hop on the Northern Line directly from Old Street towards Morden and ride for two stops to Bank. When you arrive at Bank, Monument is around a four-minute walk away, where you’ll get on the District Line towards Upminster and ride for two stops. This journey will take you just over 15 minutes.

There are three bus routes that can be taken from Old Street to Aldgate East, including the 135 towards Crossharbour or the 205 towards Bow, each of which you’ll ride for seven stops. Otherwise, you can walk around 11 minutes to Shoreditch Church (Stop T) and ride on the 242 towards Aldgate for six stops. Each bus journey will take you just under 20 minutes.

Last but not least, it will only take you 28 minutes to walk from Old Street to Aldgate East.

London Paddington

The quickest route from London Paddington to Aldgate East requires you to get the latest London Underground Line, the Elizabeth Line! So, you’ll need to ride the line towards Abbey Wood for four stops and leave the train at Liverpool Street. From Liverpool Street, you can walk around 12 minutes to reach Aldgate East.

Alternatively, you can jump on the Hammersmith and City Line towards Barking and ride for 10 stops. If the Circle Line via King’s Cross arrives first, you can ride this line for 10 stops and leave the train at Aldgate. These routes will take you anywhere between 25 and 35 minutes.

Another route you might take is the Bakerloo Line towards Elephant and Castle for eight stops. At Embankment, you can then change to the District Line towards Upminster and ride for seven stops. This route will take you just under 35 minutes.

Lastly, you might take an eight-minute stroll to Lancaster Gate, where you can get the Central Line towards Epping and ride for nine stops. Upon leaving the train at Liverpool Street, Aldgate East is around a 14-minute walk away. The entire journey will take you just under 40 minutes.

Vauxhall

The easiest way to use the Underground to get from Vauxhall to Aldgate East involves getting on the Victoria Line towards Walthamstow Central and riding for two stops before changing to the District Line and riding towards Upminster for 10 stops. The entire journey will take just under half an hour.

Otherwise, you could jump on the 344 bus towards Liverpool Street and ride for 19 stops. You should then depart the bus at Camomile Street (Stop W) and walk around 11 minutes to Aldgate East. The entire journey will take just under an hour.

London Victoria

From London Victoria, you can either get on the District Line towards Upminster and ride for 10 stops or jump on the Circle Line via Victoria and ride for 10 stops and depart the train at Aldgate. These journeys will take you anywhere between 15 and 25 minutes.

London Waterloo/Waterloo East

The fastest way to get from London Waterloo to Aldgate East is to get on the Bakerloo Line towards Harrow and Wealdstone and ride for one stop. At Embankment, you can then ride the District Line towards Upminster for seven stops or the Circle Line via Liverpool Street for seven stops to Aldgate. Alternatively, the Northern Line towards Edgware will take you from Waterloo to Embankment.

Otherwise, you might take a 10-minute walk to Westminster and get on the District Line towards Upminster for eight stops or the Circle Line via Liverpool Street for eight stops.
